When is the Deadline?
The deadline has passed. We are no longer accepting entries into the 2010 contest.

What has changed in 2010?
Over the last ten years, Song of the Year has offered monthly rounds throughout the year. The monthly winners from each month would then compete against the other monthly winners to determine the top songs for the year. Unfortunately the "yearly" winners would not be determined until the following year. In 2010, we have changed this. There are no monthly rounds. No more waiting for an entire year to find the yearly results! The final results will be announced in June 2010.
The winners of the current contest will be the "yearly" winners and be awarded the yearly prizes listed here. We will continue to offer the ten categories so that everyone has a category that best fits their songwriting style. The ten categories are: Pop, Country, Lyric Only, Rock, Instrumental, Hip-Hop, Christian, Adult Contemporary, Folk, and Dance.

Are international entries accepted?
Yes! We accept entries from anywhere in the world. Payments need to be made in U.S. Currency

Do I lose ownership of my song?
No! Song of the Year will never ask nor expect any rights to your material. All entries will remain 100% property of the songwriter.

What happens if I place in the contest?
If you are a Winner or Finalists in the contest, we will send you a Distribution Agreement that you can sign. This is a short agreement allowing us to distribute your material to our resources. You are not required to sign it. However, by signing it, you will have your material sent to labels, publishers, and more for further consideration. If there is interest in you or your material, you will generally hear back in 2-3 months from the date the material is sent out.

How long has the contest been going on?
Song of the Year has been a leading resource for songwriters for over ten years.

What if I have a success story from Song of the Year?
If you have a Success Story from a Song of the Year resource, please contact us and give us the details. Since our resources contact the songwriters directly (not through Song of the Year) if there is further interest, there is a good chance we do not know about it. We would love to hear about any Success Stories acquired through the contest!

Can I win multiple categories?
Yes! You are allowed to enter different categories with the same (or different) songs. We have had songwriters who have placed as winners in two different categories within the same contest. Each category submission is considered a separate submission so applicable submission fees would apply. You can also win a category with one song and be the finalists within that same category with another song at the same time.

Where do I send a postal entry?
Sorry, we are no longer accepting entries in the 2010 contest.

I entered but have not heard anything?
The official announcements and contest dates are posted online at the "Updates" link. Listings of the past winners can be found at the "Winners" or "Results" link. If you place as a Winner, Finalist, or another placement we will contact you directly to let you know. The 2010 results will be announced by June 28th, 2010.

What if I have a poor recording?
Poor recordings do not affect your chances of winning the contest. As long as your songwriting ability can be discerned, you can enter a simple home recording. Production quality and vocal ability is NEVER taken into consideration when determining the winners.
Can I enter a song with vocals only (No Music)?
Yes.
Will I get a record or publishing deal?
We can not guarantee that you will get a record or publishing deal. However, we do connect you with those individuals and organizations who can make this happen. The Winners and Finalists will have their material forwarded on for further consideration.
Do I need to send separate CDs for each song?
If you are entering by mail and are submitting multiple songs, you are allowed to have them all on one CD if that is easier for you.
When will the results be announced?
The results will be announced and posted online on June 28, 2010.
There will always be a delay between the last day of the contest and the announcement date as we ensure all of the submissions are reviewed. We will be waiting 10 business days after the contest is over to make sure all of the material has arrived (entries sent by mail overseas) before sending the material out to the judges. We then have to give the judges time to review each song. Once we receive all of the scores back from the judges, we have to calculate them to find out who the winners are.

Are lyrics required for audio entries?
If you are entering your song into any category other than the "Lyric Only" category, lyrics are not required. The only reason we would need the lyrics included along with an audio submission would be if the lyrics on the recording can not be heard clearly. This could be due to the mix, effects, etc... If the lyrics to your audio entry can not be understood, then you can include them. Otherwise, all we will need is the audio version of the song.

How long can a song be?
You can enter a song at any length into the competition. There are no time restrictions.
