Shannon Baker is the "Lyric Only" winner in the songwriting contest with her lyrics "Canvas". Shannon explains the context of her winning lyrics: "The lyrics were inspired by my mother who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Her memory loss became apparent when our family would reminisce over past events and she could not remember experiencing them. I found myself briefly explaining those events, family trips, birthdays, weddings and many other significant occurences.

One day it dawned on me that my words were not just simple reminders of her past but were actual memories that she could relive. My words were creating her life experiences all over again. I decided to make her memories as enjoyable as possible by writing vividly detailed poems about each event that I could later read to her. In many ways, my words were like colors that painted the memories for her to experience. Her mind had become a canvas ready to absorb a beautiful life now forgotten."

Canvas

Verse 1

Remember our lives, in nascent blue, cascading lights
Descry memories true, with Monet's Vetheuil whites
Where we tempted the envious stars, growing dimmer
Through hawthorn reeds' sway, they still faintly glimmer

This was our life… Ill take you there….

Chorus

Let my words be reflected on this canvas of you
With the breaking-bronze scatters, lush lucent blues
From the scoundrel cold forests and sky lambent views
Let my words paint a memory, a canvas to muse

Verse 2

Through icy pine boughs wander, rift, valley wide
Among glen bent birches, where we nestled inside
Set aflame a vigil, while counting sacred star's glow
While night's maiden sun shivered at the fires below

This was our life…Ill take you there.

Chorus

Let my words be reflected on this canvas of you
With the breaking-bronze scatters, lush lucent blues
From the scoundrel cold forests and sky lambent views
Let my words paint you a memory, a canvas to muse

This was our life... May you live it again this day
